Gordon felt uncomfortable under Ashlyn’s gaze. She had never looked at him like this or spoken such unpleasant words to him.
Gordon frowned, his expression darkening instantly. “Don’t play hard to get. Do you think I’m going to buy it?”
Aiken sucked in a sharp breath at this. Gordon had gone too far this time.
Ashlyn looked at him, shocked, before bursting into angry laughter. “You think I’m playing hard to get? I wonder what gave you the impression that I still love you. What makes you so confident?”
Before Gordon could answer, Ashlyn continued, “If you don’t remember, let me remind you that we are divorced. I’m not a recycle bin and I won’t accept trash like you.”
Then, she looked at Aiken and added, “If you still don’t understand what I’m saying, just ask Aiken. I’m sure he will explain it to you.”
She then turned around and left.
Aiken took a deep breath before looking at Gordon and saying, “Gordon, Ashlyn just called you trash.”
He was shocked. This was the first time he had seen someone who dared to lash out at Gordon like that.
Aiken’s words annoyed Gordon even more and his face darkened into a storm.
Keenan’s eyebrows shot up as he watched Devin chase after Ashlyn. He turned to look at Gordon and said, “You might be flattering yourself.”
Gordon felt as if Ashlyn had slapped him. He stood still, feeling utterly lost.
To Keenan’s comments, Aiken added, “I think Ashlyn is doing a good job in avoiding any interaction with you after your divorce. She doesn’t even greet us anymore. I agree with Keenan. You are flattering yourself.”
Aiken’s gloating tone annoyed Gordon even more. He glared at him and asked, “Are you Ashlyn’s friend or mine?”
Aiken merely smiled and said, “I’m just telling the truth.”
“Then go be her friend from now on!”
Aiken raised his eyebrows and said, “No problem. But the point is that they don’t like interacting with me.”
Gordon’s anger seemed to erupt off the top of his head. “Go to hell!”
Ashlyn was very upset. She had not expected that Gordon would be so conceited. It wasn’t surprising that he was, but that he went extreme.
Since the divorce, she had been conscious enough not to greet him.
Just now, Gordon accused her of playing hard to get. She found his accusation ridiculous.
Toward the end of February, Courtbush was still cold. As Ashlyn walked out, the wind bit into her skin. Her teeth shook, and she suddenly sobered up.
She just realized how much time she was wasting bothering about Gordon’s childish behavior.
She sighed deeply.
“I think you need a hug.”
Devin’s voice came from behind her. It wasn’t until then that Ashlyn remembered he was still there.
She turned around and looked Devin in the eye. Suddenly, her smile disappeared, and her look became serious. “Devin.”
Devin stood before her and looked serious. “Go ahead. Say what’s on your mind.”
“Well, it’s clear that Gordon feels nothing for me. So why don’t you continue your games with him by running after Arabella? That way, you will get the kind of outcome you desire.”
She believed that Devin was only running after her to spite Gordon since the two men had always been enemies.
She was no longer a teenage girl. She had grown past falling for sweet words.
Ashlyn was tired of this game. She wasn’t interested in associating with anyone connected to Gordon.
“You think I am wooing you to get back at Gordon?” Devin asked in a cold voice.
“Should I think otherwise?” Ashlyn chuckled. “We have only met a few times, Devin. And before I divorced Gordon, you had always been a playboy. It’s time to stop this game, Devin. Just let me go, please.”
“Okay. I will let you go. But first, I need you to return what you owe me.”
“What?”
Ashlyn was stunned. In the twinkle of an eye, Devin snatched her left hand.
“What are you doing?” Ashlyn struggled to free her hand from his firm grip.
But before she could make any progress with that, Devin removed the bracelet on her wrist. “This belongs to me.”
Ashlyn gazed at him in disbelief. “That’s impossible.”
What Devin took from her wrist was not a bracelet per se, but a simple necklace for men. Ashlyn had found it on her wrist after that night four years ago.
Ashlyn had always believed that the necklace was a gift from Gordon, and she kept treasuring it even after their divorce. It was the only piece of jewelry left that reminded her of her failed marriage.
The reality of Devin’s words hit Ashlyn, and her feet wobbled. She now realized that it was Devin, and not Gordon, who had slept with her four years ago.
Devin released his grip and wore the necklace.
Ashlyn could not believe her eyes. The necklace she had worn on her wrist for three years was now being claimed by Devin.
For a while, Ashlyn stared at the necklace as it lay against his collar. “Now we are even,” she said in a tone of defeat and made to leave.
“No, we are not.” Devin blocked her way. He looked down at her and caressed her soft cheek.
He tilted her head upwards, and slowly placed his lips on hers.
“We will never be even, Ashlyn,” he said as he disentangled his lips from hers, licking the corners of his lips.
He looked down at her amorously and curved his lips into an evil smile.
That was the first thing Gordon saw when he came out.
He stood there, glancing at the two people in front of him. When his eyes landed on the necklace around Devin’s neck, he felt as though his heart had been stabbed by a knife.
He remembered that simple necklace. One time, he went back to his room and saw Ashlyn taking off her bracelet. It was then that he realized it was a man’s necklace.
Gordon had a good memory. In the three years that Ashlyn had been married to him, she had never taken that article of jewelry off.
Although he knew it was a men’s necklace, he never thought it was a big deal that Ashlyn was wearing it.
After all, he didn’t love Ashlyn. He didn’t give a damn about who she was wearing it for.
But now that he saw the necklace around Devin’s neck, he felt a strong urge to rip it off.
Devin’s voice brought him back to his senses. “Anything we can help you with, Mr. Jones?”
As Devin spoke, there was a certain light in his eyes, as though he was showing off his trophy to Gordon.
