Chapter 40 – Divorced! Now What to Do?

However, there was nothing much Nigel could apologize for regarding this matter.

After all, he was only trying to help her speed up the process of splitting Brettley and Cynthal up. Only that, none of them expected that Brettley’s partiality to Cynthal was to an extreme extent. At that thought, Bethan let out a long sigh. She replied to Nigel, (I don’t blame you. Take good care of yourself]. Actually, this was the first time Nigel has sent her a message ever since Bethan returned to the country.

The last time, on the Ferris Wheel, Nigel did contact Bethan via Nellie’s necklace, but that was due to an emergency. Nigel was against her decision to return to the country. Because of that, Nigel even gave her the cold shoulder.

“Mommy, please don’t go back? We’ll find a better way. We don’t need that man.

“I don’t want you to return to him. I don’t want you to bear him another child.

“If that’s the case, I would rather die than let you suffer. Don’t have anything to do with that man, please…

“I would rather die than spend the last few moments of my life seeing you being tortured by him. I don’t want to see you suffer…“ When she left, Nigel said those words to her. They rang in her ears once more at that moment. Bethan closed her eyes in pain. Perhaps it was because she was too weak when she first got pregnant.

When she gave birth to the three of them, Nellie had been weak and sick since young. Nigel was also diagnosed with leukemia when he was five years old. Neil’s bone marrow was incompatible with Nigel’s, Nellie was always on medication because of her weak body, so her bone marrow was not healthy too.

Malcolm has searched high and low but could not find a successful match with Nigel. In the end, returning back to Brettley was Bethan’s only choice. (I will take good care of myself.] Soon after, Nigel replied, (Mommy, take good care of Neil and Nellie. More importantly, you have to take care of yourself too. If it’s too insufferable, come back. I don’t need to find a cure for my disease.] Bethan wanted to cry at how mature Nigel was. She has been back in the country for almost a week. She initially thought she had already driven a wedge between Brettley and Cynthal, but everything that happened today told her she was wrong.

No matter what, in Brettley’s eyes, Cynthal was irreplaceable. If not, he would not have falsified evidence to protect Cynthal, when the evidence right in front of him was overwhelming. Trying to get him to abandon Cynthal and be with her seemed difficult. It was just like six years ago, how she could not make him fall in love with her. In the end, Bethan hid under the covers and could not help but cry while looking at Nigel’s message.

She was not a good mother.

If she were to take care of herself previously, Nellie might be healthy, Nigel would not be sick either. She cried and messaged Nigel to take good care of himself. After a while, her tears slowly stopped falling. She had been crying for a long time and she was rather parched. Bethan wiped her tears and went downstairs to pour herself some water. It was dark downstairs.

Bethan did not switch on the lights.

She followed the faint lights from the side of the wall and headed downstairs. A cigarette smell was coming from the living room downstairs. The flame from the cigarette butt was waving in the air too. Bethan furrowed her brows. Before she could process what was happening, the lights in the living room were switched on. Brettley was lazing on the sofa smoking. When the living room lights were switched on, Brettley raised his eyebrows and looked at Bethan. He immediately noticed her reddened, puffy eyes. ”Were you crying?”

Bethan ignored him.

The person she did not want to see most at that moment was Brettley. She went past the sofa and headed to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of water.

“Get me a glass too,

“ Brettley’s low and aloof voice came from the living room. Bethan rolled her eyes and swore at him in her heart, but she still respectfully poured him a glass of water and placed it on the coffee table.

She did not forget that she was a maid at that moment. He was the master of the house. The maid pouring a glass of water for her master. It was the most ordinary thing in the world.

“Why were you crying?“ The moment she put the glass of water on the coffee table, Brettley gracefully tapped his cigarette onto the ashtray. His deep eyes were locked onto her face like he was trying to read her mind.

Bethan sniffled, put the glass down, and stood up straight.

“Nothing. I just wanted to cry.“ She gave Brettley a respectful glance.

“Mr. Morrison, if there is nothing else, I’m heading upstairs.“ Then, she turned and was about to leave.

When she walked past Brettley, he reached his long arm out and pulled her into his arms. The smell of alcohol on Brettley wafted into Bethan’s nose.

“Are you feeling aggrieved because of Cynthal? Hmm?

“ He pressed her onto the sofa. His voice was low and melodious. Bethan was uncomfortable with the sudden close contact. She tried to struggle from his grip, but the disparity of strength left her defenseless. In the end, she tried to push him away with all her might and ended up gasping for air lying on the sofa.

“You’re drunk.“

“I am not.“ Brettley did not touch her anymore. He only leaned back on the sofa and sneered.

“What is there to be aggrieved about? Even if Cynthal was in the wrong, you came to me with unrealistic expectations too.“

“I’m the one who lost more today.“ Bethan was amused by this theory of his. She sneered and looked at Brettley,

“But you accept her slander against you too, right? She is your fiancée. You could accept all her shortcomings. You are even willing to help her clear her name. However, I’m not the same. I am just an ordinary person who has nothing to do with her. I was secretly photographed and being called a mistress, don’t I have the right to be aggrieved?“ Brettley slightly furrowed his brows.

He helped her sit up. Facing her, Brettley lifted the glass of water and downed the water in one go.

“Actually…Cynthal means a lot to me. She means a lot to my wife too.“ Bethan stopped breathing. She did not expect that Brettley would bring her up. Bethan smiled.

“Is that so?“ Was Cynthal really that important? Indeed, Cynthal was important to her. Back then, she treated Cynthal as her closest sister. She would share everything with her. Later on, Cynthal even took her husband away from her. Then, Cynthal became a warning sign for her in her life. Every time she wanted to trust someone easily, she would think of Cynthal.

“Yes.“ Brettley looked at Bethan, drunk.

“Cynthal is my wife’s younger sister, the person she loved the most. My wife is the kindest and cutest person in the world.“ Brettley looked at her, but his gaze was somewhat in a daze, looking into the distance.

“The first time I saw her was in university. She was standing under the cherry blossom tree. She was so beautiful I could not take my eyes off her…“

The drunk Brettley openly talked about how they met in front of Bethan. His heartfelt words were all words of hypocrisy in Bethan’s ears.

He never knew that the first time they met was not under the cherry blossom tree. It was when he met with an accident. Many years back, Brettley met with a serious accident. When the car crashed into him, he was abandoned by the side of the road. It was Bethan that rescued him and sent him to the hospital.

She took care of him for a whole month while he was in a coma. She liked him, but she did not dare to fall for him. She knew that she was too ordinary. She was not worthy of a man like him, so when he gained consciousness, she left him determinedly. She initially thought that they would forget each other, but did not expect that they would meet again later on.

The moment they reunited, she truly believed that he was part of her life, so she started pursuing him like crazy. She loved him to bits and finally married him. On the wedding day, he told her plainly that he did not like her. He did not know whether he would like her in the future or not, but he would let her be the missus.

Back then, she naively believed that this was the most beautiful vow, but what happened later… Bethan looked at Brettley with loathing in her eyes. She gave up her career and went all around seeking medical advice, all because he said,

“It’s time to have kids.“ Later on, she bore him three children, triplets! However, what she got in exchange was the betraying of her younger sister, Cynthal. He also viciously hired someone to crash into her, sending her flying off the Bay Bridge. In the end, he even forged a will to insult her, saying that she cheated on him and asking him to marry Cynthal!

Every time she dreamt of this when she was overseas, a chill would run down her back. If it were not for her three children or if it were not for Nigel needing treatment, she wanted to dissect Brettley and see whether he had a heart or not!

This heartless man was pretending to be affectionate and emotional in front of her at that moment. He was even telling her how they met. What was the point? At that moment, Bethan was just a n outsider. She was just a maid that Brettley barely knew. Perhaps, if Brettley pretended to be affectionate and deeply in love in front of outsiders, it would make him feel better about his conscience?

“I don’t quite understand.“ Bethan sneered.

“If Mrs. Morrison was so important to you, why did you want to marry Cynthal? Just because she is your wife’s younger sister?“ Brettley shook his head.

“Because she left me a will. She asked me to take good care of Cynthal, best if I could marry her and take care of her for the rest of her life. So, I got engaged with Cynthal. It was indeed easier for me to take care of her that way.“ Bethan smiled.

“Just because you needed to take care of her, you made her your fiancée?“ Brettley furrowed his brows and looked at her.

“After my wife died, Cynthal and I had no whatsoever relationship anymore. To let her become my fiancée and announce it to the public was the best way to take care of her.“

“I beg to differ.“ Bethan stood up and looked at Brettley coldly.

“First, I don’t think a normal woman would openly request for her husband to marry her younger sister.

“Also, I don’t think being a fiancée would ensure whatever protection. If you truly wanted to protect Cynthal, she could be your sister or a friend. You could even publicly announce that she is your wife’s sister. Now that your wife has passed away, you have to take care of her. Would anyone object to that?“ Brettley looked at Bethan with his deep, endless eyes, saying nothing.

Bethan took a deep breath.

“So, why are you finding an excuse for yourself, Mr. Morrison? You purely want to marry Cynthal. Don’t blame it on your ex-wife. She should not be the one bearing the responsibility.
