Chapter 37 – Second Chance Love of the Missing Groom Novel

Abigail did not even have the strength to turn to her. She did not want her mother to worry after she had recently recovered, and asked feebly,”I’m fine, don’t worry… You’re discharged already?”

Sheryl nodded.

“You should find a hotel to stay in, Mom-I’ll transfer some money to you, so rest for now. Zachary here will take care of me,” Abigail said then, eager to make Sheryl leave just then

Sheryl, however, grasped her hand and said, “No, I’m worried for you… Ricky just had an accident in your car. I don’t know how bad it was, but I’m afraid you might get involved since it was registered under your name.”

Abigail understood right then.

She blinked feebly, her eyelashes twitching lightly even as she spaced out just then, “O Okay. I’ll be fine, Mom. Like I said, go to a hotel – I want to rest alone for now. You’re just going to make me worry about your health if you stay with me. I can’t calm down.”

Sheryl realized right then that Abigail was trying to make her leave, and said tearfully,” I’ve already asked your father for a divorce. Just talk to me if you have problems… Who knows, I might be able to help!”

Abigail, however, was too exhausted and not eager to talk just then. “I’m really fine, Mom. I’ll tell you if I do have problems.” She needed to wait before she could tell Sheryl about everything, but she also had to leave out certain details such as being beaten up.

If Sheryl were to find out, she would definitely panic, but there was time for that later.

Seeing that Abigail was quite weak, Sheryl then asked, “I’ll come visit again at night, alright?”

Abigail nodded. Sheryl rose to her feet and turned to Zachary then. “Thanks for saving my daughter.” “You don’t have to thank me,” Zachary replied. “No, I should,” Sheryl insisted.

After she left, Zachary wheeled Abigail to her ward. He asked nothing, because he knew that she needed a lot of rest right now. “I’ll be right here. Give me a shout if there’s anything you need or if you’re feeling sick, ” he said quietly.

Abigail nodded and closed her eyes, dozing off for two hours before waking up. “I’m thirsty,” she rasped.

Zachary poured Abigail a glass of water, and she drank half of it to ease the dryness of her throat. She felt a little just then better, but she was still aching all over. “What happened? Who did that to you?” Zachary asked, unable to hold back his indignation and firing a guess.

“Could it be Whitney?” Abigail shook her head-she would have believed that herself, if her mother did not tell her that Ricky was driving her car.

But now, everything was clear: Ricky was driving her car, and got into a car accident involving Diarmuid. The concerned departments would have gotten involved if it had been serious, but Diarmuid had decided to punish whom he presumed to be the culprit-meaning he was either seriously hurt, or very pissed off. The thought that she was assaulted because her stepbrother was involved in an accident left her feeling especially indignant.

“Zachary, I’ve made up my mind, I’ll divorce Diarmuid soon,” she said quietly. “I’ve lost one of my children, and the other might not be safe if I stayed with him. I’ll come clean about my pregnancy too.” Zachary nodded. “You’re doing the right thing.”

He was not actually obsessed with making Abigail divorce Diarmuid, but they had their own children now-that alone set an inseparable rift between them. In fact, they had so many obstacles between them they would always have trouble letting their relationship bloom, and any chance they had was gone after Whitney and Abigail got pregnant.

“I’m sure Diarmuid wouldn’t force Whitney to get an abortion not matter how much he hates her.” Zachary spoke what was on his mind then.

Abigail pursed her lips. “What are you talking about? Would he have gotten her pregnant if he hates her?”

To think that she stupidly bought Diarmuid’s claims that he felt nothing for Whitney at the time… when they were already parents! Who knew? He might just be the type who thinks with his loins. Still, she sighed and decided that she had no right to say anything against him.

That was why she did not feel grief over that — none of it mattered to her now.

At another hospital, Diarmuid’s secretary returned to give him an update on the situation.

The doctor who operated on Ms. Cox fled, but I’ve sent our people to find him. Also, we’ve found the driver involved in the hit-and-run, and punished them per your instructions. These are the details we have of her.”

The secretary held out the sheet of paper to him, but Diarmuid was not interested. “Find that doctor.”

Why would he run if he had not done anything suspicious? No one would be convinced otherwise.

“Yes, sir,” the secretary replied. “I’ll assign more people on it. Also Ms. Cox was asking to see you, but I stopped her. Should I let her in?”

Diarmuid waved her off, he was a lot less than eager, not to mention that there was no reason to. Their child was dead, and having his secretary punish that driver would be cathartic enough, or indeed payback enough for the dead child. His secretary started to leave then. “I will be right outside, sir. Just give me a shout if you need me.” However, she accidentally dropped the sheet when she headed for the door, and Diarmuid unwittingly noticed the name written in bold font on it: Abigail Bernstein.

The secretary picked it up and continued to leave, when Diarmuid called out to her. “Show me what you have on that driver.” With that, the secretary passed the sheet of paper to him…

When Diarmuid took the sheet of paper and saw that Abigail’s name was on it, he frowned.”

This isn’t the driver!”

The driver he saw was a young man!

The secretary had no idea why Diarmuid was suddenly hostile, but admitted, “The SUV was registered under Ms. Bernstein’s name…”

“And that makes her the culprit?” Diarmuid growled as he got off the hospital bed and leveled an icy glare at her. “Is she the one you punished?” The secretary kept her head down in silence. Fuming, Diarmuid bellowed, “I’m asking you a question!” “Yes, sir,” the secretary finally replied. Diarmuid was hyperventilating from sheer frustration, and the secretary quickly apologized. “Sorry, I slipped up…”

Diarmuid completely ignored her and stormed outside. Whitney, who had been standing by the door and trying to get in, saw him coming out. After that accident, it was perfectly reasonable to say that she had lost their child, and Diarmuid would not be able to say anything against that. “Diarmuid,” she called out, and reached for his arm… Only for Diarmuid to knock her away furiously. “Move!” Whitney dropped to the floor right then, but no one came to help or ask after her.

While Diarmuid’s secretary quickly headed outside and opened the door for him, he got into his car while making a call. Soon, Zachary picked up. “Do you know where Abigail is?”

“I do,” Zachary replied. “She’s been admitted to a hospital. I’m with her right now.” Diarmuid sald nothing else and hung up, and told the secretary to drive to Central Hospital.

They arrived soon enough, and Diarmuid quickly alighted and strode inside, heading to the ward where Abigail was.

Zachary was standing outside when he saw him, and approached him, saying, “Abigail’s pregnant, but she suffered a miscarriage. I’m sure you know why.”

He said that on his own volition, because he did not consider Abigail a stranger-she was

Diarmuid’s wise! Now that she had made up her mind to keep the surviving twin, she was definitely going to divorce Diarmuid.

At the same time, Diarmuid’s tense reaction faded as his cheeks clenched. “What did you say? She’s pregnant?”

As Zachary nodded, he felt as if his breath left his lungs as his chest tightened terribly!

She was pregnant? Whose child was it?! It could not have been his because he had never touched her!

“Calm down, Diarmuid. You both cheated on each other, don’t you think? Whitney Cox is pregnant with your child, so you’re both even. Don’t get too upset, and try not to blame Abigail too much. Just part ways amicably…” Diarmuid, however, simply shoved Zachary away as he roared furiously, “Fuck off!”

He kicked open the door to Abigail’s ward, but she did not react much because she knew he was there.

Getting agitated now would only hurt her child, which was why she must show restraint.

“Let’s get a divorce, Diarmuid,” she said calmly.

However, Diarmuid’s eyes were flaring with rage, his chest heaving as a fire seemed to spark within. “Divorce? Just because you say so?”

While he could not help feeling heartache as he saw her lying feebly in bed, he was incensed by the fact that she was pregnant with someone else’s child!

Even as he resisted the impulse to strangle her, he growled, “Who’s the father? Tell me.

Abigail remained calm as ever. “You knew I was sleeping with other men already.”

A vein bulged over Diarmuid’s temple right then as he glared at her furiously. “Weren’t you taking morning after pills? Were you cheating on me again after that?!”. “Yes, I did,” Abigail replied. “I’ve cheated on you on more than one occasion, so let’s get a divorce.”
