That was when her phone rang in her pocket–it was a call from Whitney, and she hesitated for a while before answering.
“Abigail? I’m sorry about last night. My temper got the better of me last night, so please don’t hold it against me. Also, I asked for a favor from Diarmuid, so you can attend the internship at Central Hospital. Think of it as my way of apology, and remember to clock inat 9 AM.”
Abigail frowned-Whitney never usually beliaved like this.
Still, she was not about to miss such an opportunity. “Got it.”
She told Ms. Lang that she was resigning right then, and Ms. Lang was very agreeable, even paying her right then and there. “Here, this is what you’ve earned.”
However, when handed two stacks of hundred dollar bills, Abigail only took a few-she had not been working that long and did not deserve so much, and so simply took what she believed she deserved.
Seeing her virtue just then, Ms. Lang said, “You can come to me if you have any trouble in the future. I won’t turn you down if I can help.”
“Okay,” Abigail replied earnestly.
After leaving the dance studio, Abigail rushed straight to Central Hospital, arriving just shortly before nine in the morning.
Whitney was waiting, and brought her to the chief – he was a male doctor in her fifties, and told Abigail to defer to Whitney, since Whitney had been there for days before her. Abigail did not protest, but in reality, Whitney had a hand in the arrangement. She was an intern and had no right to boss anyone, but by using her connection to Diarmuid, she could browbeat anyone. Later, when Whitney took Abigail to get her uniform, she asked, “When did you marry Diarmuid?”
Abigail knew that she was not that charitable, and was not surprised that she would reveal her intentions already.
Nonetheless, she smiled. “I’m not at ease to reveal that.”
Whitney flashed a smile that did not reach her eyes and lied, saying, “It’s fine. He did tell me that you’re not together because you like each other.”
Abigail remained calm, but she thought then that Diarmuid and Whitney were really close.
Seeing that she was not responding, Whitney knew right then that her hunch was right: Diarmuid and Abigail were not an ordinary married couple. After all, should a wife not be upset upon finding out that her husband was cheating on her, or at least interrogate him?
Abigail, however, acted like it was of no consequence.
Still, after getting her uniform, she felt like she could vomit.
“I need the washroom,” she said as she shook off Whitney, while feeling something foreboding. Her period was very late, and despite feeling that it was unlikely, she got a pregnancy test from the pharmacy… and it turned out to be positive!
She was dumbfounded – how did this happen? She had clearly taken her morning after pills… although the second pill was in her bag, forgotten after Diarmuid had caught her with
However, taking just one pill only offered a success rate of 80%, even though she and that man had only done it once. Still sitting on the toilet, her thoughts were scattered.
What should she do?
Abigail could not believe that she was pregnant, but quickly composed herself and left to get an ultrasound.
Through it all, she wondered if the pregnancy test results might be wrong, but the scan revealed that she was two months pregnant.
“Congratulations, you have twins!”
Abigail was utterly dumbfounded. She was really pregnant? And with twins?! “Are you sure there’s no mistake?” she asked hoarsely.
“Of course not. Why would there be? See here? Two gestational sacs,” the doctor said as she moved the inouse cursor, outlining the area.
Abigail craned her neck for a look, and seeing the ultrasound left her overwhelmed with various emotions.
“However, I can see that you’re not feeling well. You should rest more now that you’re pregnant,” the doctor said then.
“Understood,” Abigail replied.
With that, she picked up the ultrasound sheet and left the ultrasound room.
Whitney saw Abigail leaving and entered. She probed the doctor and found out right then that Abigail was pregnant!
She was left gritting her teeth in fury, and wanted nothing less than to kill Abigail right then!
After all, if Diarmuid learned that Abigail was pregnant with his child, would she stand a chance?
Obviously not. Still, she played it cool and sought Abigail out, telling her with a smile, “‘You’ve just started your internship, so how about taking the night shift with me?”
Abigail nodded.
There was a surgery in the afternoon. They would be doing the prep work while the head surgeon of the hospital did the hard work. He told them that they should observe and learn the process of the surgery no matter what hospital they worked at before–it was a necessary process is they want to be surgeons here as well.
However, while Abigail was learning as she worked so seriously she forgot that she was
pregnant, Whitney had no suchi intention, and was constantly darting and looking at Abigail’s belly from time to time.
After working for half a day, she was exhausted, but there was still the night shift. She had a drink, but her vision turned blurry, and she soon lost consciousness completely…
“Abigail? Abigail?” Abigail vaguely heard someone calling her name and slowly opened her eyes, but soon frowned because she realized she was aching all over. Finding herself somewhere unfamiliar, she blurted, “Where am I?” “In my car,” Zachary replied. Abigail clutched her belly and sat up while looking around. “Why am I in your car?”
She remembered that she had a night shift.
“You were lying unconscious in the parking lot,” Zachary explained. “I forgot something at the hospital and came back. I presumed that it was you at first, so I thought I was seeing things-but it really was you after I came closer. Why are you here at Central Hospital?”, “I got the internship,” Abigail replied. Zachary blinked in surprise. “Diarmuid forgave you?” Abigail then remembered Whitney, and soon realized why she was at the parking lot.
The drink she had was given to her by Whitney.
They were doctors-they knew their drugs, which was why Abigail suspected nothing when she had that drink.
But what did Whitney do after knocking her out?
That was when she felt an ache in her belly.
Panicking, she listed her shirt to check her own body, and her eyes widened when she spotted the needle hole.
Did Whitney find out she was pregnant? Was that why Whitney knocked her out and performed amniocentesis on her?!
“What do you think you’re doing, Abigail Bernstein?!”
Diarmuid had promptly rushed to the scene when he got the call from Zachary, only to find Abigail lifting her shirt in front of another man, baring her fair, slim waist! How shameless could she get?!
On the other hand, Abigail remembered Whitney’s relationship with Diarmuid, and did not react well to Diarmuid’s presence-not after what Whitney had done to her. “I can do whatever I want. Why do you care?”
She was utterly panicked just moments ago. Even though she had every intention to get an abortion after learning about her pregnancy, her rationality left her when she found out that someone was trying to hurt her children.
The fear of loss-the fear of her children being hurt-had seized her.
Moreover, Whitney had found out that she and Diarmuid were married, and must have presumed that the children were Diarmuid’s.
Was that why Whitney had tried to hurt them? Her nerves getting the better of herself, Abigail forgot that Zachary was with her as she lifted her shirt.
