But he seemed not to hear her. His gaze was fixed on her face as he strode toward her.
This was the first time that Ashlyn was seeing him like this. She subconsciously took a step back and frowned when her back hit the door. “Devin, what—”
Her words were cut off because he walked up to her, lifted her chin, and kissed her on the lips.
His hands held hers up against the door, his strong body covering her own. Ashlyn’s back pressed into the door, allowing no way for her to retreat. She raised her leg, but Devin pressed down on it as if he knew what was on her mind.
He was like a beast whose desires had been suppressed for a long time and kissed her as if he was going to eat her alive.
Ashlyn trembled. She had never kissed any other man except on that drunken night.
Devin’s kiss was overbearing yet gentle, which inexplicably made her want to indulge in it. «
The combined smell of cigarettes and mint reached her nostrils. It was strong, but not as disgusting as she had thought it would be. But she didn’t like it either.
Her heart beat so fast, she thought could hear it clearly as if someone was beating a drum in her ears.
Devin held onto Ashlyn tightly, rendering her unable to resist him. She felt her legs weaken and become numb.
Her high-heel tilted suddenly and she staggered, causing her to lean against Devin.
Devin still didn’t let her go.
He kissed her repeatedly, as if to comfort her, but more like asking for more. The sudden sound of a door opening caused Ashlyn to stiffen.
Devin’s lips left hers. “Are you so cruel, Ashlyn?”
But he merely let go of her to put his hands around her waist
Ashlyn gasped for breath. She was angry about what Devin had done to her. But when she met his eyes, she was stunned.
She recalled what he had said that night.
Devin held her in his arms and Ashlyn smelled his scent.
She felt her brain swell a little and her thoughts become a mess, just like her heartbeat.
She should be very angry, but she had no intention of teaching him a lesson. Ashlyn merely stood there, motionless and breathing heavily, listening to her disordered heartbeat.
After a long time, Devin moved and broke the silence between them. “Do you love Gordon so much?” he asked, lowering his head to look at her. His words were cold and sarcastic. Ashlyn could feel the irony in them. But only Devin knew whether he had said those words to mock her or laugh at his own foolishness
Ashlyn looked away, not uttering a single word. Devin snorted, exasperated. “Are you mad at me?” She looked up at him and didn’t answer his question. Instead, she asked,
“Did we meet a long time ago?”
Devin did not expect Ashlyn’s question. He paused and smiled. “Why? Do you think you’ve seen me a long time ago?”
“When I was fifteen, | was surrounded by hooligans in an alley. | fell unconscious, but a boy picked me up and took me to the hospital.”
Ashlyn continued after a brief pause, “I woke up at the hospital and my parents were next to my bed. I was still dressed in the school uniform the boy put on me. There was a campus card in the pocket that had the name Gordon Jones on it.”
“I thought the person who rescued me was Gordon, so I paid attention to him. Later, I discovered that I was in love with him. l always felt he was a gentle person. I thought he was just pretending to be cold, and he was actually very kind on the inside.”
“Since that day he took me to the hospital, I have not seen Gordon be gentle again. During the past few months, I keep thinking that I’ve made a mistaken. You were the one that saved me then, weren’t you?”
She knew it wasn’t love at first sight with Gordon. She didn’t only fall in love with him because she thought he saved her.
The affection Ashlyn had for him had taken time.
Gordon was a great guy. He was good-looking in a way that attracted girls ‘ attention. Despite his coldness, he was competent and clever.
He could easily win first prize at math competitions and could also tum a failure into a victory at a basketball game.
Except for his coldness, Gordon was a dream lover that was in line with girls’ fantasies. Back then, it would have been impossible for Ashlyn not to fall in love with Gordon’s charm, much like all the other girls.
Her sentiment for him was long-lasting, which explained why she had feelings for him for so many years.
The root cause of Ashlyn’s attachment to Gordon, however, was the day when she was picked up by that young boy who whispered gently in her ear, “You’re safe now.”
During the many times Ashlyn dreamed about Gordon, she felt extremely spoiled by him.
If it hadn’t been for that tenderness, Ashlyn would never have paid attention to Gordon. She wouldn’t have thought his coldness was just a cover for the softness underneath.
However, if it wasn’t Gordon that saved her back then..
Ashlyn had never considered such a prospect. Today, she had to rethink her version of the truth.
Devin was the one that saved her.
Devin was shocked by what he heard. He gave Ashlyn a strange expression. “If you had been saved by someone else, you would never have fallen in love with Gordon, right?”
“T would never have had a chance to be in love with him.”
Devin wasn’t expecting to hear such an admission.
Suddenly, he felt the ridiculousness of the entire situation, All these years, he had thought Ashlyn had fallen in love with Gordon at first sight. Devin had never shown his true feelings because of this.
If Gordon and Ashlyn hadn’t been divorced, Devin would never have known how he had contributed to their marriage. How could he have misled Ashlyn into thinking that Gordon had saved her? Devin’s eyes went red with emotion.
“Yes,” he said. “I saved you.”
Although she already had a guess, Ashlyn’s expression changed when she heard Devin’s answer.
Her grip loosened, and the bag fell from her hand to the floor. It smashed down on their feet.
Neither of them paid attention to it. Ashlyn stared into Devin’s intense eyes and felt upset. “I need a break, Devin.”
No longer wanting to go to work, Ashlyn retrieved her bag from the floor and opened the door behind her.
Ashlyn looked down at the suitcase Devin had given her. She hesitated for a moment before she took it in.
Devin, who had been so intense just now, stood at the door and stared at her with red eyes. He looked lost and shattered, much like a child who had misbehaved.
