Gordon’s frown deepened as he strode back to his car. He got in, started the engine, and then drove back to his own apartment.
It seemed that he was going to have some trouble sleeping tonight. Devin stepped hard on the gas pedal, speeding off while fighting against the strong winds in the mountains.
He rounded a few corners and took the lead, eventually winning the match. When it was all over, he could hear people surrounding his car and cheering for him loudly. However, Devin couldn’t focus on them at all. His mind was wandering back to what Gordon said that night. He couldn’t stop thinking about it, and it left his chest feeling like it was made of heavy lead.
“Is something wrong, Devin?”
When Felix Brooks took the helmet from Devin, he saw that the latter’s eyes were narrowed, and his expression was noticeably icy.
Felix was taken aback by this. He hadn’t seen Devin look like this in a long time. For a moment, he almost forgot that this was how Devin usually was back then.
Devin didn’t spare Felix a glance and simply leaned against the car while taking out a cigarette from his pocket. He lit it up and began to smoke His reward of one million was soon brought over, and Felix handed the suitcase to him carefully. “Here are your winnings, Devin.”
Devin inhaled his cigarette and let out a few smokes before lifting his head to look at Felix. “You guys can have it all. Just divide it among yourselves.”
Felix stared at Devin, noticing the latter’s handsome looks in particular. In all honesty, Felix would’ve fallen for Devin if it weren’t for the fact that he knew how cruel of a man Devin truly was
However, one million was still quite a lot, so Felix hesitated. “Are you sure that you don’t want it, Devin?”
“You’re so noisy.”
Devin grabbed the suitcase from Felix and took a few stacks of cash from inside. However, just when he was about to throw them away, something stopped him at that moment. Without a word, he closed the suitcase and placed it inside his car, apparently having changed his mind.
Everyone was befuddled by Devin’s behavior, including Felix, who was the most acquainted with him among the crowd. Devin drove towards the direction of Ashlyn’s apartment. The overall distance from here was more than 30 kilometers. Fortunately, there were very few cars on the road at night, so Devin managed to reach the apartment in less than thirty minutes.
Taking the suitcase containing the one million with him, Devin went towards the elevator.
There were mixed feelings in his heart the moment he arrived at her door. He glanced down at his watch to check the time. Seeing that it was too late for him to pay a visit at this hour, he decided to let her rest well.
Devin simply stood there all night with his back leaning against the wall, smoking one cigarette after another while still holding the suitcase.
All eight cigarettes in the pack were gone in less than two hours. He glanced at his watch again and saw that it was already five in the morning. However, the sky was still dark during this early hour.
Devin took the cigarette case that he stuffed with the cigarette butts and ashes before striding towards the garbage can to throw it away. After that, he went downstairs and bought himself a bottle of water as well as a box of chewing gum.
As he ascended the stairs to return, he felt the beginnings of excitement rush through his veins. Soon, he’d be able to see what was waiting for him behind that door.
He was looking forward to it.
Ashlyn had a dream. When she was fifteen years old, she was knocked out unconscious after being cornered in an alley. Devin rushed to her and brought her to the hospital. But when she opened her eyes at the hospital, the person standing beside her bed was Gordon.
The loud alarm on her phone jolted her out of her sleep and brought her the realization that it had been a dream.
She sat on the bed for a while before she got up to freshen up.
Ashlyn hadn’t fallen asleep until one o’clock in the morning and was still sleepy after six hours of sleep. She yawned as she applied makeup.
It was a quarter after eight when she finished. When Ashlyn opened the door, she found Devin leaning against the wall, a suitcase by his side. He was still wearing the clothes from the previous night. The smell of cigarettes was strong on his body, but when he spoke, a fresh minty smell pervaded the air.
“Ashlyn,” he said hoarsely. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked haggard, as if he hadn’t slept all night.
Ashlyn looked at him, surprised. “Have you been here all night?”
Devin didn’t answer her question. He merely looked at her. For the first time since she had known him, there was no light or smile in his eyes, as if he could not see the hazy future.
Ashlyn’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t like seeing him like this.
“Here,” Devin said, handing her the suitcase.
Ashlyn looked down at it, confused. “What’s this?” she asked.
“Money.”
He grabbed her hand and thrust the suitcase into it. He loosened his own grip on it. Ashlyn subconsciously took the suitcase as she asked, “What do you mean by this? Why are you…”
Ashlyn trailed off, as another possibility reared its head. She asked, “Did Gordon tell you?”
Devin didn’t ask her anything. He didn’t want to hear that she was going to remarry Gordon.
However, Ashlyn had given him the answer. Devin froze at her words for a long moment but soon collected himself, the weary smile disappearing from his face. He looked at her, his eyes stormy. “Yes,” he said
And then, he turned around and left.
He walked slowly, as if he had trouble walking.
Ashlyn felt her eyes tear up. Before she could stop herself, she called out to him. “Devin.”
Devin stopped in his tracks at her voice.
“Actually, L..”
Ashlyn wanted to say that she didn’t want to remarry Gordon. But she bit back her words since she and Devin were not a couple. #
Devin waited for a while for her to say something. But when no explanation was forthcoming, he frowned and walked out.
It turned out that he was never meant to be the one for Ashlyn.
How would he get the chance to be with her?
It was so funny.
It was his wishful thinking.
But he didn’t want to accept this. He wanted to be the man standing next to Ashlyn.
He was not a kind person. Why was he pretending to be generous and gentle?
Devin made up his mind.
If this was the case, he would no longer be kind.
Ashlyn hadn’t expected Devin to come back. She was surprised when she saw him turn the corner. “Devin?”
