He hadn’t come here to quarrel with Ashlyn.
Gordon managed to control his anger. As he watched Devin and Ashlyn bid each other goodbye, he felt like his existence as a man who was about to remarry Ashlyn was redundant.
Once Devin had left, Ashlyn looked at Gordon and asked, “What’s going on?” Gordon frowned at her. He wanted to ask why she was still with Devin at such a late hour. But he merely said, “Grandpa wants us to hold the wedding as soon as possible.”
“Got it.”
Ashlyn was not in the least surprised. Now that she had agreed to remarry Gordon, Nathaniel would want her to be a member of the Jones family as soon as possible. The sooner, the better.
Her calm attitude didn’t convince Gordon of her passion for their impending marriage. “Ashlyn, tell me the truth. Do you really want to marry me again?”
The smile on her face faded as Ashlyn looked up at him. “I told you I’m going to take revenge on you.”
Gordon pursed his lips before saying, “If you think the wedding is too soon, I’ll tell Grandpa that there is no need to be in such a rush. We can—” Ashlyn interrupted him before he suggested that they should see each other for a while before holding the wedding. “Since your grandpa is in a hurry, we’d better do as he says.”
She also wanted to end all of this as soon as possible. All she cared about right now was to completely cut off her relationship with Gordon and the Jones family. She didn’t want to be entangled with them anymore. Gordon was happy to hear her words.
It looked like Nathaniel was right. Ashlyn pretended to be cold and indifferent, but it looked like she was only waiting for him to concede. Gordon thought of the string of messages on Ashlyn’s old phone, and his heart softened. “Okay.”
He paused for a moment and said, “I’ll ask Lowell to make an announcement. You don’t have to respond if you don’t want to.”
Ashlyn hadn’t expected Gordon to be so considerate. “Thank you,” she said, surprised.
Gordon knew he had guessed right when he saw the surprise in her eyes. He thought the reason why Ashlyn was so indifferent was that she was still mad at him.
Maybe he had hurt her too much in the past. That was why she was trying to pretend that she didn’t care about him.
He used to be arrogant and stubborn. He would always rush to conclusions without even knowing her side of the story. What was worse, he even allowed his family to push her around.
He treated her badly. It was normal for her to be angry with him.
For the first time in his life, Gordon was learning to think from another’s perspective. So he decided to pass over Ashlyn’s meeting with Devin. He looked down at his watch and said, “It’s getting late. Get some rest. I’d better be leaving.”
He wanted to ask her about their wedding rings. But her reluctance told him that she would not be honest with him.
He decided to have their rings made to order. Once she cooled down, he would take her to design her ring
“Good night,” Ashlyn said with finality and then walked into her apartment.
She couldn’t understand why Gordon was acting strange this night.
Gordon was such an arrogant man. So when he told her not to respond to the upcoming announcement if she didn’t want to, it surprised her. Under normal circumstances, he would just tell her to respond to it. What the hell was wrong with him today?
Ashlyn shook her head to get rid of her thoughts. Gordon’s strange behavior wasn’t her business. All she was interested in was to know if Gordon was the one who had saved her eleven years ago.
The possibility was almost zero, though. Back then, she had asked Fred to find out who had been near the alley where she was unconscious, and Gordon had been there
Every day after school, Gordon would play games in an Internet cafe nearby. The campus card that was in the pocket of the school uniform proved that the uniform was Gordon’s.
The day she went to his school to return his uniform, she saw Gordon being punished by the students on duty because he was not wearing his uniform.
Ashlyn had wanted to give his uniform back, but Gordon had left without even sparing her a glance. She wasn’t a student of the school and couldn’t get in.
She hadn’t given up though. She had found a way to send it to Gordon through someone else. But she heard that he had thrown away the uniform. Ashlyn sighed and decided not to dwell on it.
Maybe she was just imagining things. She and Gordon hadn’t met before Gordon stared at Ashlyn’s closed door for some time before he turned and walked out. But as soon as he stepped out of the building, he saw that Devin was still standing there.
Gordon’s frown deepened when he saw the coat Devin was putting on. If he wasn’t mistaken, that was exactly what Ashlyn had on earlier.
Gordon squinted his eyes and said, “It looks like you’ve had nothing to do recently.”
Devin smiled and tilted his head. “I don’t see how what I do with my time concerns you.”
“Listen to me. Stay away from Ashlyn or you’ll regret it.”
“This is not the first time you’re threatening me, Gordon. Don’t make it habit. As for the relationship I entertain with Ashlyn, you have no say in it, so don’t act as you do.” Gordon snorted.
Annoyed by Devin’s arrogance, Gordon took a step closer to him and said smugly, “Ashlyn is going to marry me again. I believe that gives me every right to tell you to stay away from her.”
Devin’s strong facade faltered for a while, but he quickly shook it off and said firmly, “In that case, I’ll listen to you when you get married. But don’t expect me to do so when she is still single. Until there’s a ring on her finger, I’m going to keep asking her out. Maybe you’re just too scared that she’s going to choose me. Is that what scares you?”
“Devin! Don’t tempt me!” Gordon raised his voice and glared at Devin. “You are a big man now, so act like one. Don’t be so childish!”
“Childish? I had no idea loving someone honestly was childish. It’s so strange that you think it is.”
“Cut the crap, Devin. You know if you truly love Ashlyn or not. But I’m warning you now. Ashlyn is not a pawn you can use in some sick game just to spite me.”
Devin couldn’t hold in his laughter after what Gordon just said. He couldn’t believe that after all this time, Gordon still thought this was about some trivial issues they might have once had.
Gordon had always been absorbed in his own self, and he clearly hadn’t changed.
Devin sighed and said, “Don’t make everything about you, Gordon. I met Ashlyn before you did.”
Devin had no intention of having an argument with Gordon right now. He didn’t want Ashlyn to see the two of them fighting so immaturely.
When Devin finished speaking, he only sent an icy gaze Gordon’s way before turning around to leave.
Gordon glared at Devin’s retreating figure, feeling irritated as he thought about Devin’s last sentence. Devin basically claimed that he had met Ashlyn first before Gordon did.
What a joke! It didn’t make any sense since Gordon was obviously the one who Ashlyn met first, and they were even married for three years.
Gordon felt upset the more he thought about it.
He discovered that Devin had fallen in love with Ashlyn.
It wasn’t because Devin wanted to go against him or irritate him. It was simply because he was in love with Ashlyn.
Gordon’s expression twisted into a scowl.
When he lifted his head, Devin was no longer in sight.
Gordon was left alone here in the middle of the night.
