She kicked the door open and stomped out of the car indignantly. But before she could do anything, Devin pulled her behind his back.
“Did you call the police?” he asked in French.
“Wasn’t able to,” Ashlyn replied in kind.
Devin looked back at her and grinned. “Alright. Protect yourself, okay?”
As he spoke, he rubbed her head affectionately.
Ashlyn nodded. “Okay.”
These drunk men didn’t understand a lick of French. Santos impatiently rapped the hood of the car with his iron bar and barked, “Hey! What’re you two talking about? Give me the damn phone!”
Ashlyn pointed at the car and said indifferently, “Well, it’s inside.”Santos asked one of his friends to get the phone. When they saw that Ashlyn wasn’t able to call the police, these thugs got bolderstill.
They reeked of alcohol. Clearly, they had drunk a little too much that night and didn’t now what they were doing.
They were in the middle of a relatively busy road, but passers-by all thought that it was nothing but a traffic accident, so no one stopped to help them.
At first, Santos didn’t see Ashlyn clearly through the tinted window. It wasn’t until she had gotten out of the car that he saw how beautiful she was.
Santos licked his lips lasciviously and said, “Well, well, well! What do we have here? If your pretty girlfriend gives each of usa kiss, we’ll forget the whole thing.”
Fifty thousand was no trivial amount. Five kisses instead of fifty thousand dollars sounded like a good deal to Santos.
Standing behind Devin, Ashlyn had fallen silent. When one of the men reached out to grab her, Devin kicked him away without hesitation.
‘And that was how the fight started. Ashlyn kicked these thugs mercilessly. Even after they were knocked to the ground, Ashlyn would stomp on them with her high heel, filling the air with their pained screams.
When the police arrived, Devin was hitting Santos’ leg with his iron bar. Santos screamed like a pig being slaughtered. His arrogance was long gone.
Hearing the police siren, Ashlyn hurried forward to pull Devin back. “That’s enough, Devin!”
Only then did Devin put the iron bar down.
He raised his head to look at her, and the coldness in his eyes startled her. His usual smiling eyes were slightly bloodshot, filled with cruelty that she had never seen before. Realizing that he frightened Ashlyn, Devin came to his senses. He threw the iron bar onto the ground, took off his coat, anddraped it around Ashlyn’s shoulders, “You might catch a cold.”But Ashlyn didn’t respond. She was in a trance.
For a moment, she had a feeling that it was Devin who had saved her that night, not Gordon.
The police had already arrived when the thought flashed in
Ashlyn’s mind. The police pulled the five suspects off the ground. Two of the policemen walked over to Ashlyn and Devin and began questioning them. “What’s your name? What happened?”
Ashlyn looked over at Devin, who gave her a smile before answering the questions. “My name is Devin Stanley. Thirty minutes ago, I was driving on the road when the car driving in front of us slammed on the brakes. I had to slam on mine as well, and this is how the accident occurred. Then the driver of the car in front of us got out and asked me for fifty thousand dollars.”
“I didn’t argue with him because I could smell alcohol on his breath. I agreed to pay him and told my friend here, Ashlyn, to call the police. Before that happened, the driver took out an iron bar from his trunk. This man asked my friend to kill each of them. His request was ridiculous. I raised my arm to stop him, but he became angrier and raised the bar to strike me. Others began to attack us as well.”
Devin related the entire story. He pointed at their car, which Santos had smashed, and let the cop know there was a vehicle recorder inside that recorded the accident. “It should be very good evidence.”
One of the policemen called out to the officer standing next to Ashlyn. “Captain, each of these five people has a blood alcohol content level that exceeds the limit.”
The captain frowned and replied. “Take them to the station!”
He then tured to Ashlyn and Devin. “I have to ask you to come down to the station to help us with the investigation.”
“Absolutely.”
Devin smiled down at Ashlyn. “It will all be fixed soon.” Ashlyn looked up at Devin, wondering what brought about his change of attitude.
He looked so fierce just now when he fought those men, but now, he was so gentle.
It was a chilly and windy night. Ashlyn looked at Devin’s gorgeous physique, which was shown off by the thin white shirt that stuck to his body whenever the wind blew.
Ashlyn averted her eyes and went with Devin to the police station to give a statement on the accident.
Galen, Devin’s secretary, was waiting at the station gate when they arrived.
Galen was shocked at seeing Ashlyn but recovered quickly. “Hello Mr. Stanley, Miss Ramos.”
Ashlyn greeted the secretary with a smile. “Hello.” “We’re going to give a statement,” Devin said to Galen.
right. 1’ll wait for you.”
Devin’s secretary seemed like an interesting person to Ashlyn. She smiled and turned around to go make her statement.
Ashlyn’s car was pulled away from the accident for damage assessment almost an hour later.
Devin drove Ashlyn back to her apartment in his secretary’s car. She wasn’t sure how Galen got back home
It was midnight when Devin pulled the car outside of Ashlyn’s apartment.
Ashlyn took off his coat and returned it to him. “Thank you, Devin.” Devin did not take the garment and said instead, “I’ll walk you upstairs.”
Ashlyn didn’t object as she looked at him.
Once they were out of the car, Devin put his coat back around Ashlyn. “You can return it after we get upstairs.”
Ashlyn agreed helplessly. “Okay.” No one else was in the elevator as they rode it up to the floor of Ashlyn’s apartment.
“Do you mind if I pick you up for work tomorrow?” “Ashlyn.” Two male voices sounded out at once.
Both sides were shocked.
Ashlyn looked at Gordon before unhurriedly taking off the coat and returning it to Devin. “Thank you, Devin. I’m home now.”
She smiled calmly.
Gordon didn’t find anything wrong or suspicious with her attitude.
But watching Devin standing next to Ashlyn filled Gordon with unhappiness. Much to his surprise, Devin smiled at him.
Gordon’s face darkened. When he looked back at Ashlyn again, her calmness made him unable to blame her.
