Gordon frowned but said nothing as he followed Jenifer.

SinceAshlyn is pregnant, it’s important that you marry her as soon asyou can. You can move out with Ashlyn, so there will be fewer arguments in the family. I know you have your own mind. It’sjust a suggestion from me.”
Gordon could not help but think of what Nathaniel said as he looked at Jenifer.
He knew his mother had to be extremely miserable. She had been a part of the Jones family for four decades. Her husband was acheat, and her father-in-law was cruel to her.
Gordon couldn’t understand what kept his mother there.
If Jenifer had half as much gumption as Ashlyn, she could have been living a much less dehumanizing life than she was here with the Jones family.
Jenifer waited for a while, but Gordon merely looked at her wordlessly.

“Are you happy living with the Jones family?”

Gordon felt a headache coming on. “Mom, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t mean anything by that. I just think that you have been trapped in the Jones family all these years. You are now old.There is no need to continue suffering here.”
This was the first time that Jenifer was hearing such sweet,supportive words from Gordon. Her eyes sparkled with tears as she said, “Don’t worry about me, Gordon. I’m fine.”
Her heart had been dead for a long time. All she wanted now was her children to live good lives for themselves.
Gordon gave up, knowing how stubborn Jenifer was. “Take care of yourself. I will handle myself.”
“Okay. Come back more often. We can have dinner together whenever you’re free.”
“Okay.”

Carl made his way to her, saying, “Ma’am, Mr. Jones wants to have a word with you.”

Jenifer knew what he was going to say. She had always been acoward. Even if Nathaniel were to accept Leon’s mistress and her child into the family, she wouldn’t dare raise her voice against it.“Okay, Dad.”
These were Jenifer’s words to anything that Nathaniel said,
Nathaniel was annoyed. He rubbed his temples as he said, “Forget it.You can leave.”

Ashlyn put the phone on speaker and placed it on the table to make herself a concoction of brown sugar and ginger powder.She hadn’t been sleeping well, and she didn’t keep herself warm enough on her business trip. Being on her period and her immune system vulnerable, she quickly caught a cold. She wasn’t usually very comfortable during her period, but it was worse now.It wasn’t easy getting brown sugar and ginger powder abroad,but Talia had been thoughtful enough to bring her hot water lastnight.
Ashlyn didn’t feel very good on the way back, but she kept it to herself.
Now that she was home, the first thing she did was make a concoction of brown sugar and ginger powder.

On the other end of the phone, Jessie had spoken and cursed so much that it was a wonder she hadn’t exhausted all existingcurse words. Noticing that Ashlyn hadn’t said a single word for along time, she stopped and said in worry, “Ashlyn? Ashlyn, are youokay? Did something happen?”
As Jessie’s worried voice pulled Ashlyn out of her thoughts, sherolled her eyes and said into the phone, “I’m the one who is suffering from this, but I’m not as dramatic as you. Calm down,Jessie.”
Jessie didn’t like that Ashlyn wasn’t taking this seriously. Shesighed and said in a serious voice, “I’m serious, Ashlyn. They said some wicked things. Don’t you want to stop it?”
“Not now. Let them curse as much as they want. They’ll pay for it accordingly.” People had to pay for the sort of things they posted on theInternet.
Defamation was a crime punishable by law, and Ashlyn was goingto make sure they paid for all their cruel words.
Besides, she didn’t need to do anything since none of it was true.Although Ashlyn couldn’t see her, Jessie squinted her eyes andsaid, “The last time I heard you say something of the sort waswhen we were sophomores. You dealt with those people backthen. What do you have in mind for these people?”
Ashlyn smiled. “You know me well. I won’t do anything to them. I’m a good citizen who abides by the law. I won’t break the lawby attacking people. However, their actions have made the stoc kprice of Fairway Group drop. We have lost tens of billions of dollars because of them. I should defend my rights and interests using the law, right?”
The Ramos family was rich, but the rumors had caused the stock price of Fairway Group to plunge.
