His question took Vivian completely by surprise.
What was he doing? Should he not be questioning Lulu for not listening to her?!
“I-It’s a holiday today, and I’m here anyway,” she blurted. “So I helped you arrange your books and documents in the study…”
She was so confident in herself that she could freely enter Zachary’s mansion, since she was his personal assistant.
Zachary’s tone remained cold. “You’re my assistant, not my maid. This is none of your business.”
Vivian, however, took it for a gesture of concern. Her nervousness promptly turned to delight as she replied cheerfully, “Yes, Mr. Slate. I understand.”
It takes a woman to know another, and Lulu could read the room enough to tell that Vivian had misinterpreted Zachary’s words. In fact, she was still convinced she could become Mrs. Slate!
“By the way, I’ve compiled the files on several other maids and left them on your desk. I’ll see to it personally,” Vivian added.
“There’s no need. Sue here is good,” Zachary said, since he trusted Lulu’s competence and was fine not reading any files.
“But she’s new to the job, Mr. Slate!” Vivian promptly protested. “She’s also obviously from a poor family, and you’d be losing valuables if she happens to be a thief. You also have a baby at home-what if something happens? I’ve read her file myself, and she has a disabled husband. There’s no way she can fully focus on her work, and you might get dragged into it if her family gets into more trouble!”
Sue had certainly been insulted countless times in under a day.
From being a bumpkin to being accused of a thief, the latter which was especially unacceptable for her, the wife of a police officer!
Her face flushed from frustration, she finally let go of everything she had been holding close to her chest. “Ms. Crowe, I understand that you question my professionalism, but you shouldn’t be so shallow with appearances and even insult me for it. My husband is a police officer who is only disabled because he was saving lives. And I’d never stoop so low to be a thief!”
When she was done, she realized the others were all looking at her She promptly lowered her head in silence, tugging her thoroughly bleached shirt uncomfortably.
Lulu quietly walked to her side, clapping her on the shoulder to offer assurance.
On the other hand, Vivian was stunned that some maid would snap ather in front of Zachary and was left En. stumped in turn.
Then, Vivian was left gaping as Zachary said shortly, “It’s fine. You can stay.”
In the end, he was not dumb enough to believe Vivian-he trusted Lulu and her judge of character.
Seeing that Vivian was silent, Zachary told Lulu to go with him to the nursery, leaving just Vivian and Sue looking at each other in the living room.
Naturally, it was mostly just Vivian glaring at Sue, upset that she was so tactless.
Sue was clearly uncomfortable since she was not used to the place and fidgeting from Vivian’s judgmental glare. Fortunately, Vivian did not say another word as she stormed out of the mansion.
In the nursery, Zachary had picked up Star and was gently rocking her. “Did you miss daddy?”
Lulu could not help spacing out as she watched them.
Beside Zachary’s towering form, Star looked just like a tiny doll, even as Zachary carried her carefully and tenderly.
Still, Star’s little pink lips were puckered adorably for a moment before she suddenly pouted, clearly hungry just then.
“I think she’s hungry. Make her some milk,” Zachary said.
Lulu did not respond, so she looked up. “Ms. Jones? Wendy Jones…?”
Finally realizing Zachary was talking to her, Lulu quickly nodded and boiled some milk.
Passing it to Zachary, she said, “She’s still very young. Don’t feed her too fast.” Zachary actually knew what to do since he had been caring for Star even when they were abroad. He would have done it himself too if were not busy with work, but he needed his career now that he had a child. After all, he had to ensure that his daughter could lead a happy life without worrying about daily needs.
Lulu certainly felt comfort to see Zachary’s endless love and patience with Star. It was certainly more ideal to let Sta stay with Zachary instead of having to face an uncertain future alone with Lulu herself. If anything, her being allowed to stay around Star was a bliss in itself.
“Was everything fine?” Zachary then asked. “Vivian told me you brought her outside.”
Returning to her senses, Lulu told him everything that had happened today, leaving out the fact that Vivian had been trying to push for one of the other maids to get hired.
After all, she had no idea what he thought of Vivian for the moment.
By the time she was done reporting her day, Star was dozing off in Zachary’s arms while still gnawing on her pacifier. She appeared to be enjoying herself, and the way Lulu lullaby spoke so softly was like alu that comforted her.
“I see that she likes you. She can fall asleep even as you talk,” Zachary said, his face lowered as he looked at Star, his expression hidden.
Putting Star back in her crib, he added, “About the maid, you can do as you see ee fit. All ask is that Star remains the top priority in everything.”
Over the next three days, every housework in the mansion was completed swiftly and properly. Sue was efficient with every task as if she was constantly charged, even occasionally helping Lulu with Star while cooking.
Watching as Sue worked around the living room, Lulu eventually could not resist asking, “Don’t you feel tired? You’ll wear yourself out if you do this every day, and your family needs you too. You can actually have two days off every week, but with the same pay.”
As a fellow woman, she certainly could empathize with Sue.
Aside from her job as a domestic helper, she would always ask for a couple hours’ leave every day to care for her husband back home, cooking and preparing everything he would need. She would also be assisting him with personal hygiene, as well as taking him for regular checkups-machine assistance only helped that much.
“I’m fine I should do this much when you’re paying me so generously.” Sue smiled earnestly as she scratched her head, chagrined. “Being allowed leave is more than enough. I wouldn’t ask for more.” “It’s alright,” Lulu told her. “There’s actually nothing important to do and a couple days of break is fine. I can handle things myself, while you need rest and your husband needs care. You’re not a machine- don’t overwork yourself, and take regular breaks.”
Sue felt warmth in her heart right then. It was the first time someone did not hold prejudice toward her at all.
Eventually, thanks to Lulu’s persistence and as a way to take care of Sue, she was arranged to take a break once a week and have two more hours’ leave each day.
It was not easy for things to become stable. But while Lulu was convinced things would go on like this, she received a message from Sue on a certain day…
There were already people exercising in the mansion park early in the morning, and various domestic helpers were going out to get groceries.
Sue was no exception, treading along the wide pedestrian path and taking in the scenic sights. She was unexpectedly calm since she was satisfied with how things were, and she was certainly no fishwife who constantly gossiped about employers or complained about how unfair the world was.
However, while Sue was thinking about what local delicacy she should cook for Lulu today, a shrill voice called out from behind. “Wait up, Sue.”
Her thoughts interrupted, she turned to find Vivian in a red dress and a pair of stilettos, with her face covered in exquisite makeup.
Sue scowled right then, pausing as she stared at Vivian in silence.
“Why are you leaving already? Don’t you have thing to buy? Do you have something to ask me Wendy Jones is really E
working you too hard…” The content is on Even Vivian walked toward Sue, she did not forget to attempt driving a wedge between Sue and Lulu just to appear more affable, as if she was not the one mocking Sue before.
Not bothered to play her game, Sue remained impassive as she asked, “Is there a problem?”
“Can’t I have a chat with you even if there’s nothing?” Vivian shrugged. “Don’t worry-I’ve already helped you with your grocery run. It’s still early, so let’s have breakfast together and have a chat.”
