An adult should have been able to tell that a baby was having a fever, even if they were not a professional childcare worker.
He blamed himself for not noticing!
Zachary snapped grumpily at Erma even as he picked up his suit. “Pack up your things and leave. I don’t need you here!”
Then, turning to Lulu, he said, “This way, Ms. Jones!”
She hurried outside without looking back, with Luna still in her arms.
Fortunately, Zachary did not park his car in the garage, though he glanced at Lulu as he drove—she looked utterly worried, and there was pain in her eyes.
“Hurry!”
Zachary did not drag his feet for the sake of his baby and drove straight to the hospital.
Likewise, Lulu was flustered throughout the journey and only heaved a sigh of relief when they arrived.
Since it would take a lot of time to queue up, Zachary called a friend beforehand to take a number at the pediatrics department.
There was a vein throbbing on his temple and his tone was frantic—Lulu judged that he was caught off guard by Luna’s sudden illness and that he was not neglecting her.
Nonetheless, Zachary was on the phone for just a couple of minutes before getting a number, and they hurried over to find an experienced pediatrician waiting for them.
The doctor heaved a sigh of relief soon after he checked Luna with a stethoscope. “Don’t worry—she’s probably just exposed to a little wind. We’ll take her in for further examination, so please wait for a moment.”
Lulu heaved a sigh of relief again upon learning that Luna was fine and almost lost her balance and fell.
She was still enfeebled since she had yet to fully recover.
Lulu was silent, since children were not to be trifled with.
As for Zachary…
He worked eficiently, and after some examination, he called them inside, roling his eves as he said. “t’s fortunate that vou broucht her here whenyou did. She has been feverish for a couple days, and any longer would have ed to pneumonia.Aren’t you her guardians? Can’t you tel that she wasfeverish? There’s no way she can tell you how she’s feeling when she’s just a baby, y’know?’
“Yes, but be more careful next time. She might catch another fever if she’s exposed to the cold again!”
Lulu turned to look at Luna, who was asleep. The sight of her fever-flushed cheeks almost prompted Lulu to stick her forehead against Luna’s!
“I’m sorry I didn’t take good care of you…”
Behind her, Zachary was staring, and Lulu quickly cleared her throat, realizing that she had lost composure.
“Mr. Slate,” she said. “I’m afraid you’ll have to let go of your maid. If you trust me, you can entrust her care to me fully.”
Zachary turned away. “I can see that you have a great sense of responsibility. I’d be more or less at ease with you caring for my baby.”
In fact, he would be immeasurably relieved since she knew how to properly take care of his baby!
“Doctor!”
Lulu, however, clearly did not hear Zachary and turned around to the pediatrician. “She’s very young. Wouldn’t this cause chronic conditions?”
The pediatrician shook his head as he wrote a prescription. “You’re worried now? It’s like you were incapable of that earlier. Just remember how important caring for children is and that you must constantly keep an eye out to prevent this from happening again. Your baby could’ve suffered from brain damage if you’d brought her here any later!”
Lulu nodded repeatedly.
After getting Luna’s medicine from the pharmacy, Luna was already given an injection.
Lulu felt her body weak from head to toe as she left the pediatrics department, and Zachary could see that she was exceedingly enfeebled. He wanted to offer a supporting hand, but his body stopped him.
Still, seeing that she cared so much about her child, he suddenly sighed. “It’s my fault. Erma was unreliable… but I’m sure I’ll be relieved with you now!”
Lulu turned and smiled at him, even deliberately mentioning Stan. “With your generous salary? I’d be doing you an injustice if I failed, Mr. Slate. You’re my cousin’s friend too, so I’ll need to do my best based on that alone or that would drive a wedge between you two!”
Their exchange was formal, and the journey back to Zachary’s home was silent.
Luna was asleep and quiet, her flushed cheeks returning to normal.
Lulu’s expression was tender even as she looked at her.
Still, just as they were about to head upstairs, Zachary suddenly asked, “By the way, may I ask where you live, Ms. Jones?”
“What?” Lulu became nervous right then.
Zachary did not believe that it was inappropriate since it was for Luna’s sake too. “Erma actually lives nearby, since thought I needed her help withmy baby. I didn’t think that she’d be that useless!”
“I don’t live that far, but taking care of a baby is a long-term undertaking. lf you’re willing to prepare a room for me, Ill take it!”Zachary smiled and nodded-his house was huge, and a room was clearly no issue.
Several liahts in the apartDSS1downstairs, and Lulu gently put Luna in her crib after heading upstairs
“Please take this, Ms. Jones,” Zachary said, taking out a debit card after closing the door.
“W-Why?” Lulu was surprised by the sudden offer.
Why a debit card? Could Zachary have caught on?
“I don’t spend much time home, and you might not be able to reach me at times. Hold on to this just in case!” Zacahry said, turning toward Luna, who was sleeping soundly with rosy cheeks.
He was not lying when he said that he was busy—work has been piling ever since he had been abroad for a while. That was why he could not spend more time at home and could not even tell that his baby was sick.
“If something urgent like this happens again, or there’s something my baby needs, just use this card. I’ll deposit money in it from time to time, and you’ll probably see some use for it!”
Zachary was definitely a good father to Luna, and Lulu nodded in the knowledge that he was doing this for the child. “Your daughter is lucky to have you.”
Zachary flashed a begrudging smile and looked up at the wall clock to find that it was already 1 AM. “Oh, it’s late…”
“You should stay with your baby,” Lulu said. “Someone must stay with her at all times, since there’s a chance she might wake up. Also, I have things to pack from my place—I’ll move most of my belongings over to your house by tomorrow.”
Zachary nodded and hesitated for a while before asking, “Do you need a ride?”
“It’s fine—there’s no reason to give me one.” Lulu waved him off as if it was only natural. “I’m not staying that far from here.”
With that, she started to turn to leave, not willing to let him find out where she lived!
After all, Zachary had all the tools at his disposal to investigate her. She was concerned that he would suspect something if he somehow found out that Abigail was the one who got that house for her!
Getting a cab on the wall home, she leaned against the window, unable to calm down.
It had not been easy for her to be reunited with her child, and to see her suffering so much again when she did, her heart felt as if it had been cut!
“Baby…” she murmured as she stared outside at the quickly disappearing view as the taxi disappeared into the night.

Meanwhile, Abigail was at home, patting her cheeks to have her cheeks absorb the moisturizing essences she had just applied. Her face had been feeling dry and needed a little skincare.
Diarmuid was sitting on their bed and readying a document, but he quickly put it away when he heard a clatter!
He raised a brow. “Used up? Let’s go buy more.”
With that, Diarmuid said nothing and returned to reading.
Skincare was certainly a troublesome process. Applying the layers of mik, moisturizer, and essence must have taken half a day, but that was the onlyway abigail would be satisfied.
“Alright!” After one last look at her own reflection in the mirror, Abigail put on her pajamas and snuggled up to Diarmuid. “What do you think? My skin feels as smooth as a peeled egg, don’t you think?”
“A peeled egg…?” Diarmuid muttered as he looked up and brushed his hand against her cheek repeatedly.
Abigail was just teasing him, but her cheeks started to heat up from embarrassment because of his stare.
Then, Diarmuid lowered his gaze, where her loose pajamas dangled and bared her chest underneath.
