Abigail laughed coolly. “You’re affecting my mood by following me around. Or should I thank you for that?”
“By the way, why are you alone? Where’s Diarmuid? I mean, is he really working now that you’re back? Really, I wonder what’s more important to himβ money or love?” Zachary tried to provoke her just then.
Abigail was not about to get upset with that. “He’s just busy with work. How does that affect our love?”
Zachary was left speechless-to be fair, he was asking for it.
He turned and strode off. “Fine, I won’t follow you anymore. Just leave!”
Abigail knew he was following her because he failed to make her talk last night. “You thought I brought Lulu back with me, didn’t you?”
Zachary looked at her in silence, which was basically a silent admission.
In fact, that was exactly why he followed her.
While he did not lie about going sightseeing with Jean because he did want to let Abigail and Diarmuid spend time together, he also wondered if Abigail would go outside today.
And if she did, she surely would be going to see Lulu, no?
Naturally, that was only if Lulu did come to Franconia.
Abigail told him slowly and clearly then, “Lulu didn’t come back with me. She’s gone after Martin died, and I don’t know where she is, just as she did not tell me where she went.”
Zachary waved her off. “I know.”
After all, if Abigail was resolute about hiding Lulu from him, he would not find out anything from her anyway.
But with Martin dead, Lulu probably had no place to go.
The only one Lulu had was their daughter, and Lulu would probably miss her.
As such, he just had to take good care of Jean, and Lulu would eventually come to Jean once she felt better.
Looking at Abigail then, she said, “If you can contact her, tell her I don’t care about her past. If she’s willing to raise Jean with me, we can always start over.”
“Why would you tell me that? I don’t know where she is,” Abigail replied, but she had certainly heard him.
At the same time, Abigail knew that Lulu had trouble accepting men-Lulu was only willing to live for her daughter.
Zachary smiled and said rather pointedly, “That’s why you both are friends.”
Abigail certainly knew what he meant but did not respond.
Still, she did not feel like going out now, and sat on a nearby bench while Zachary watched her nearby.
Bzztβ
Her phone suddenly started buzzing, and she took it out to see that it was a call from Eagle.
She glanced at Zachary and made sure to speak quietly out of earshot.
“Yes?” he asked.
“There’s an unexpected situation, maβam,” Eagle said.
Abigail tensed up immediately, her fingers clenching over her phone right then.
Still, she quickly feigned nonchalance and told Zachary, “Diarmuid just called me to his office. I’m going now.”
She hailed a taxi, while Zachary said nothing as he left.
Abigail kept watching Zachary until he had gone quite far and asked, “Is Lulu in trouble?”
Eagle was smart enough to tell what was going on on her end and did not press the issue. “Yes, ma’am. There’s a little issue with her surgery.”
Abigail frowned. “She just had one surgery, didn’t she? Wouldn’t it be a while before she can have another?”
“Yes, but Ms. Adams wants it to be done with and is asking for the next one already. She was very insistent.”
“Did the doctor agree to it?” Abigail asked.
“He did when I asked, but he also stated that it would be exceedingly difficult,” Eagle replied. “The main reason is due to her health reasons, and the surgery caused further compromise.”
“So you mean to say she went through with it, and there’s a problem now?”
Eagle seemed afraid to respond as if afraid to upset her, taking a long while before saying, βYes, ma’am.”
Abigail was seething. “You should have stopped her!”
Eagle stayed silent and did not argue, though Abigail could tell that he was unable to stop Lulu.
Calming down, she said, “Sorry, that was rude of me.”
“It’s alright. I’ve failed what you’ve asked-it’s only reasonable that you’re upset,” Eagle replied respectfully.
Abigail understood that she should not have taken it out on him. She asked,” What did the doctor say?”
“He said that they did their best, but has stated that they might not achieve the expected outcome,” Eagle said very quietly, as if blaming himself.
Even if Abigail did not blame him, he believed that it was his failure to persuade Lulu that led to this outcome.
“Okay, I understand,” Abigail said, hanging up and asking the driver to take her to the Remy headquarters.
It was her first visit here since Diarmuid moved his business operations here.
Abigail ran into James as she aligned at the front entrance, who quickly greeted her when he saw her. “Looking for Mr. Althoff?”
Abigail nodded. “Yeah.”
“I can take you to his office,” James told her. “He’s having a discussion with someone at the moment.”
“With who?” Abigail asked offhandedly.
“An important client,” James admitted and pointed at a person as they walked past a guest room. “That’s her.”
Abigail turned where he pointed and saw Diarmuid seated behind a glass wall. The inside of the room was decorated with Franconian antiques, making the room appear grand and somber.
She spotted the woman sitting opposite Diarmuid just then.
So, he really was having a date with a woman.
Seeing her young, pretty face, Abigail could only quietly say, “I see. Let’s wait in his office.”
“It’s just ahead,” James said and quickly led her to Diarmuid’s office.
She entered to find the interior decorated in the same way as the guest room.
“Do you want a drink?” James asked. “I’ll send someone to get it.”
“Fruit juice… By the way, is the woman with Diarmuid married?” Abigail asked.
“What?β James was a little confused just then and stared at Abigail.
He then realized that Abigail was asking about the marital status of the woman having a discussion with Diarmuid and became curious. “Could you be … jealous?”
Was that why she asked?
However, Diarmuid strode in just as James was about to answer, and he quietly lifted a brow when he saw Abigail there too.
Abigail waved James out of the room right then. “I need to talk to Mr. Althoff.”
“Yes, maβam,” James said tactfully and left Diarmuid’s office, not forgetting to close the door.
